Why Should You Care About Better Breakfast Month?

It’s back to school time and parents are juggling and struggling to get the kids dressed, fed and off to school. Then they struggle to get to work on time. In all the struggling, they often miss the most important meal of the day, breakfast. Since September is Better Breakfast month, maybe it’s time to change the morning routine a bit and take time out for a healthy, family meal.

According to the Mayo Clinic, children who normally eat a healthy breakfast are more likely to:

  • Meet daily nutrient requirements

  • Be at a healthy body weight

  • Have better concentration and be more alert

  • Miss fewer days of school

Mom and dad will experience the same benefits, plus have more energy and often, a better mood.

What should you eat for breakfast?

There’s no rule that says you have to get up hours ahead of time to make a big heavy meal. You can always refer to the “Colors of the Rainbow” when choosing healthy breakfast foods and you can get good solid advice on simple breakfast foods here.

Making breakfast a happy family meal is probably just as important as the food you eat, so let the kids participate in meal preparation and sit down together. Have a cheerful conversation and do your best to encourage your kids to enjoy their day.

This might be a big change for some, and it will probably be a little difficult at first. Once you get in the habit of having a healthy family breakfast, and you start to feel better, mornings will get easier and more pleasant for the entire family.
